Where the magic happens...

...the magic of constructing yards of fabric into complete ensembles, that is. I'm working on an evening dress for Dallas Career Day and I thought I'd give you guys a look at what I've been doing.

This is an illustration of what I'm going for with my dress. It consists of "I will make you crazy" knife pleats, some "you can't just iron me" velvet straps, and "I don't stay in place" chiffon and satin...am I crazy? The dress will be a challenge, that's for sure.

These are the pattern pieces for the velvet straps before they're sewn together. I made myself little arrows to make sure I have the nap going the same direction when I do sew them together.

I ordered a perfect pleater to make pleating the chiffon a little easier. It takes a lot of time, precision, and patience but the results are beautiful! Find a good album or T.V. show to listen to while you pleat and it's actually kind of relaxing! Beirut and 3rd Rock from the Sun have been the soundtrack to this project for me.

Beautiful, right?! However, if you remember my dress, it's going to take a while to get the skirt fully pleated. Especially when you mess up, like me. The first time I did this I did the pleats in the wrong direction. Those moments hurt! But that's how fashion design goes- take 2 steps forward, you always take a step back.

On a different note, here's another ensemble I finished about a month ago. It was also inspired by menswear, specifically my main man, Michael Bastian.

Here's the inside with a plaid dupioni silk, "baseball" stripe top, and boucle wool shorts and coat.

And all that was done in my tiny little shoebox of a room that I call my "atelier!" Now I'm back to work!

Stories and Themes 2012

I've been really interested in and inspired by men's fashion lately. Sometimes I find it more interesting than women's. So, this week I created a couple storyboards of what I think will be upcoming trends for menswear in 2012.

A nautical vibe is popular in many spring lines right now and red is definitely the color of the moment. Navy, light blue, and neutral colors are incorporated to balance the bright red. Tailored suits featuring cropped or cuffed pants will be trendy along with knit tops paired with shorts for a more casual look. Also, no socks allowed! Louis Vuitton, Michael Bastian, and Lanvin were some of my favorite menswear lines for Spring 2012.

Later this year, we'll see men sporting ensembles in the greyscale with a touch of cooler colors to not be so monochromatic. Tailored jackets and pants with a trouser leg will be popular for the office while cable and heavy knit sweaters can be worn on the weekends and after work. Guys will need a nice pair of boots to tuck their pants in and a cool hat to go along with the weekend look. John VarvatosSimon Spurr, and Michael Bastian (again) were my favorite menswear lines for Fall/Winter 2012.

I would love to hear what everybody thinks about my storyboards. Is there enough content, too much? What could I add or get rid of to enhance my themes? What do you think of the trends I noticed and the   rest of the collections I linked?

Fashion Influence 2012

What will be the popular trends in 2012 and what events will be the influence??

My guess is on the much anticipated release of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire. As one of fashion history's most identifiable eras, the roaring 20s are coming back but with a modern twist. The remake of Gatsby is having the costumes custom made, allowing for a contemporary version we can identify with and work into our wardrobe. So we can expect some incredible looks!

Flappers of the 1920s wore straight and flat dresses accessorized with long strands of pearls. Pastel colors shown in luxurious fabrics and detailed with fringe, beads, or feathers were also common. Ralph Lauren has already put his own spin on the 1920s dress in his Spring/Summer 2012 collection. He doesn't just stem his collection from the standard flapper dress, he also incorporates women's 3-piece suits which mirror the character Jay Gatsby's.

This trend can be easily found and easily worn. Just find a neutral toned dress with fun detailing, pair it with lavish jewelry and some fun heels and you're the new Daisy Buchanan!
