Trendspotting at UNT/Denton, Spring 2012

Inspired by Bill Cunningham, I went around and took my own snapshots of the fashion of Denton, TX. I chose a nice Saturday night to see what young and fashionable people are wearing today. I found myself at a local bar, because where else are you going to find any self-respecting college student. It also gives them the opportunity to dress up and get out of the sweats they where to class.

A small group of girls chose a dressed up casual look with long necklaces and belts to accessorize. I liked that they all stepped a little bit further with the "little black dress-look," adding jewelry, prints, and a neutral color into the mix.

I thought this couple looked really cute together, even though they said they didn't plan matching each other. I love the girl's open back dress and how she added a contrasting black belt to go with her white sequined dress. I thought the look was sexy but in a subtle way- something hard to pull off. The guy kept it simple with a white button down and black slacks- I think he was going for the girl being his main accessory.

I thought this dress was very interesting. It was made out of a microsuede- I love when designers use an unsuspecting fabric for something like a casual "going out" dress. The open shoulder and neckline outlined with grommets also add to the different look of this dress. I like that she added a belt to give the dress shape too.

I loved her dress and thought the look was eye-catching for such a simple dress. It's the color red that makes the dress- it's why red is my favorite color. She paired it with a skinny black belt and black tights and boots. Belts seem to be the main accessory for girls tonight- they're perfect for defining figures while just adding something extra that the dress was missing.

We have another sequined dress but this time in black. I like how she gave it a twist with the pearls, turning a party dress into a more classic look. I love the other girl's flowing white top and how she paired it with a fitted red skirt- again the color making it more interesting. I thought it was a very sophisticated look. After working with striped fabric last semester, I love the stripe dress pictured. The vertical stripes on the side gives it complexity for such a simple silhouette.

I liked what all of these girls were wearing. Even though they weren't decked out in dresses and heels, how they wore their sweaters and jeans was trendy and gave it a dressed up appearance. I thought the different colored scarves and the shiny clutch were perfect accessories for their ensemble.

Another trendy sequined garment paired with a simple cardigan gives it a sophisticated look. The two silky blouses have pretty silhouettes but I think their purses worn across their body really make the outfit, giving it a classy feeling.

Although I didn't get her to pose, I really liked how she put together her outfit. Her full top tucked into her tight-fitting skirt equalizes the outfit. Her tall boots do the same thing since her skirt is mini length. My favorite detail is the unique sleeve cutouts.

What inspires me...

1. The Strokes- I love everything about The Strokes and hearing them play live was one of the best experiences of my life. Seeing live shows or even just listening to music at home always gives me the best feeling and leaves me truly inspired. Credit: found here

2. Free People- I love the girl that Free People represents. She's free-spirited and perfectly unique, which are qualities that I try to work toward when I design.  It's been my favorite brand since I was sixteen when I bought my first FP dress and it continues to be the highest influence in my personal style. 3. E.E. Cummings- E.E. Cummings is my favorite poet and his work is absolutely lovely. It's moving and inspiring and makes me think about life. He promotes love and individuality in his poetry, two characteristics that I think every person should possess. Credit: found here

4. Movies- I love going to see a really good movie and having that hour or so to be completely captivated. Movies are inspiring in different ways from how they give me a different view on things to making me feel something new. Shawshank Redemption is probably one of the best inspirational movies I've ever seen. Credit: IMDB
